Slava and Leonard Grigoryan are justly regarded as Australia’s finest classical guitarists. They seem to have a telepathic ability to draw emotion from every note of a repertoire that spans centuries, continents and genres.
Painters, sculptors, writers and dancers speak of their art flowing not from them but through them, and a Grigoryan Brothers’ performance embodies that – they have an intangible connection to the soul of the music, even when it has been composed or arranged by others. Past, Present & Future honours those others who have inspired their art.
Past: Favourite works from their back catalogue – from Bach to Towner, from Tchaikovsky to Lovelady.
Present: Their own compositions and arrangements including a selection from the ARIA nominated soundtrack they wrote and recorded to the movie A Boy Called Sailboat. The movie has won a number of awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay at the prestigious Boston Film Festival. They will also perform pieces from their latest album and project: ‘This Is Us: A Musical Reflection of Australia’ (a collaboration with the National Museum of Australia) which premiered at the NMA in March this year.
Future: An album of Spanish music, and another album of Handel keyboard suites masterfully arranged for them by their most highly honoured collaborator – their father Edward.
