Melba Big Band

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts

$10 - $25

Past Event

Melba Big Band presents the best of the vintage big band era with a dash of modern jazz.

Established in 2018 by pianist Catherine Conner, this ensemble is larger than life, hosting five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets and a three piece rhythm section. The all-female ensemble is led by tenor saxophonist, saxophonist, vocalist, composer, mentor and producer Justine Jones.

For over 6 years, Melba Big Band have been championing the great era of swing, performing the best of the big band genre from the 1920s-80s including the music of Nina Simone, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Ray Anthony, Neal Hefti, Jimmy Heath, Jerry Grey, George Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Mike Barrone, and Maynard Ferguson.

Be transported back in time and experience the big band sound that cheered up a generation. Revisit the youth of your ancestors and discover what music made them dance and fall in love, with classics such as A String of Pearls, Little Brown Jug, Eager Beaver, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Our Love is Here to Stay, Angel Eyes and S’wonderful.
