Paul Grabowsky – piano
Mirko Guerrini – woodwinds
Niko Schauble – drums

When playing in a trio setting, the intimacy and clarity of the triangular dialogue is immensely satisfying. A trio conversation is all about shifting balances, allowing each individual space, freedom and significance in validating the contributions of the others. Trust plays a large part in this conversation, as does listening, and the willingness to be challenged, to lead and to be led; to be surprised and subverted are all part of the fun and fantasy of improvisation. Niko and Paul have been playing together for decades, and Mirko seems to read their communication as a natural extension of his own voice. Torrio! came together almost by accident, as a spontaneous performance at a concert honouring the late great Australian saxophonist Bernie McGann on the 1st of September 2013.
Since then, many gigs later, the ensemble has achieved that singularity of purpose which trio music requires. Torrio! wishes to play as one, sublimating themselves into a flow.

Torrio! toured Japan, Italy and Israel in 2017. Apart from numerous club concerts Torrio! has performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre 2017, Ukaria Cultural Centre 2019 and most recently Adelaide Festival 2021.

Reviews

‘Torrio! encapsulates a rare and near-perfect moment when three tremendously capable musicians have come together and applied their substantial talents to the deeper subtleties of spontaneously created music in the trio format.’
Stuart Vandergraaff, Loudmouth (Music Trust e-zine)

‘There is something celebratory about the name Torrio! – exclamation mark and all – and the truth is that there's a lot to celebrate, when Paul Grabowsky, Mirko Guerrini and Niko Schauble come together. Because behind the Torrio! is the moniker of a true supergroup, a trio comprised of three giants of Australian improvised music. Torrio! have an album out – one recorded in one of the most important European musical landmarks, Rome’s Casa del Jazz – and they are launching it with a concert at Melbourne Recital Centre. Which is a perfect opportunity for a chat with the trio’s drummer, Niko Schauble.’
