Two Blood 雙血
The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts
Monash University Clayton Campus
$20 - $65
From the embers of forbidden loves comes a sprawling tale of belonging that cracks into the core of Australian identity.
Two Blood sees the blush of early romance collide with the violence of our history in an explosively physical work from three of Australia’s most visionary artists.
Dance across borders, language, culture and time.
A Tagalaka woman and Cantonese man embark on a forbidden love affair forged in the flames of a burning country. Centuries later, their remains are discovered in a forever embrace, setting into motion a sprawling exploration of belonging that pierces the core of our identity.
Created by visionary artists S. Shakthidharan (Counting and Cracking), who was recently awarded the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize for drama, Australian Dance Theatre’s first Blak Artistic Director Daniel Riley, and dancer/choreographer Jasmin Sheppard – who has woven her own family history through the work – Two Blood 雙血 sees Australian Dance Theatre (Marrow; Tracker) continue to break new ground with an interdisciplinary ceremony that blends film, music, and movement across borders, cultures, and time.
Revelling in our multiplicity, Two Blood 雙血 is an intensely physical work that crashes through the narratives that have shaped our nation.
“A small miracle… a swirling poem of struggle and survival expressed vividly in dance, text in multiple languages, music, and the moving image.” – Limelight Magazine ☆☆☆☆1/2
“Electrifying…The dancers’ breathing and panting is frequently amplified, drawing attention to the bodily toll of performing to survive in a system that refuses to recognise your humanity” – InReview
Kindred People is an Indigenous‑led gathering held on Boonwurrung Country, guided by Elders and an Indigenous Steering Committee. Each event sits within a broader program of ceremony, performance and knowledge exchange, grounded in respect for Country and the sharing of living Indigenous knowledges. These works invite audiences to listen deeply, learn together and come to the gathering with care.
