Ft Rebecca Barnard

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts

$15 - $29

Past Event

Making his Count’s debut is iconic Australian saxophonist and singer Wilbur Wilde, celebrating more than 50 years in music.

Wilbur Wilde has performed with some of the biggest names in music including Skyhooks, Elvis Costello, Tom Jones, Split Enz, Roy Orbison, Cold Chisel, Dire Straits, the Angels, Dragon and James Reyne. Perhaps though, he is most known for his tenure as resident saxophone player on the widely popular television show ‘Hey Hey it’s Saturday’ for 16 years. He has also appeared in films such as The Coolangatta Gold, Jenny Kissed Me, Dead End Drive-in and Mad Max.

His own project, Wilbur Wilde Blowout, was born on Valentines Day 1984. Their repertoire features compositions by Billy Harper, John Coltrane, and the master of jazz vocalese – Eddie Jefferson. For their Count’s debut show Wilbur has invited along his favourite Blowout members including Rebecca Barnard (vox), Craig Newman (Bass), Mark Fitzgibbon (Piano) and David Hicks (Drums).

Rebecca Barnard

90’s indie rock icon Rebecca Barnard hails from Aus jazz royalty – her late father and uncle Len and Bob Barnard both pioneering legends of that scene. After forty years as a beloved staple in the Australian music industry (Rebecca’s Empire, Rockwiz etc) Rebecca has finally recorded her first Jazz Album “The Night We Called it a Day”. The album is a culmination of years of Rebecca’s life in music – a resplendent arrival in sunny pastures by one of Australia’s cultural treasures. Rebecca effortlessly breathes soul and connectivity into this album of refreshingly under-exposed jazz standards dating from 1937-1963. The production style is reminiscent of artists such as Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot, making the album more accessible to a mainstream audience than the word ‘jazz’ might imply.

Produced and arranged by pianist/composer Monique diMattina, it features stunning performances from the creme of the jazz/roots scene – Sam Lemann on guitar, Ben Robertson on Bass, Paul Williamson on sax and Steve Grant on trumpet. Rebecca’s son Harry O’Mara carries on the Barnard legacy, guesting on drums. Recorded by Pat Telfer at Brian Brown Studios (VCA) and mixed by Shane O’Mara at Yikesville, this local production has an international and ageless resonance for a broad audience of music lovers.
