About MPAC – Monash University Performing Arts Centres

MPAC is a space for community, creativity and discovery. Presenting live music, theatre, experiential shows and festivals. Where Monash research excellence meets the transformative power of artistic collaboration. Based at Monash University, welcoming to all.

We acknowledge and pay respects to the Elders and Traditional Custodians of the land on which our venues stand. These places proudly continue a long legacy of  dreaming, storytelling, song and ceremony.

Alexander Theatre

In 1968 the bold and beautiful Alexander Theatre first opened its doors at Monash University’s Clayton campus, signalling a new era of performance in the south east. Around the campus, new suburbs were being planned, built and settled across the open orchards, fields and market gardens of Melbourne’s eastern fringe. The city was expanding.

Robert Blackwood Hall

In 1971, the Robert Blackwood Hall was built to serve the growing community. This 1598-seat venue holds a special place in the hearts of many Melburnians. Perhaps you performed on stage in one of thousands of school and community performances held here, or sat as a proud parent in the audience at your child’s graduation.

George Jenkins Theatre

The 426-seat George Jenkins Theatre, located at the Peninsula Campus, was built in 1973 and became part of Monash University in the 1990s and hosts a wide variety of performance styles. This includes local performing arts groups, touring professional companies, corporate, educational and multicultural groups.

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts

In May 2019, Monash University launched the newest cultural and nightlife precinct for Melbourne events, theatre and concerts, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts. The Centre houses three venues:

  • The revitalised 561-seat Alexander Theatre.
  • The new 130-seat David Li Sound Gallery.
  • A 176-seat fully flexible live music venue, The Count’s.
