Hop across icebergs, meet a friendly Gentoo penguin or a playful Ross seal, and see what surprises await when you go fishing in Antarctic waters! Returning guest artist Kathy Holowko brings the magic of Ice Play; an interactive foyer installation created especially for Family Fiesta’s celebration of Antarctica.

Step into a land of ice and wonder with Ice Play! This interactive art experience brings Antarctica to life with real field recordings from Monash University’s Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (SAEF). Our scientists have been busy exploring the frozen continent, studying its incredible wildlife and icy landscapes, and now you can too!

Fun fact: did you know that Gentoo penguins collect ‘love pebbles’ to give to their mates? They offer these special stones in the hope that they will build a cosy nest together. You can join in by choosing your own ‘penguin love pebble,’ warming it in your hands, and thinking of someone special. Then, make your offering to the Gentoo penguin colony.

Ice Play is part of Family Fiesta’s expedition to Antarctica this year. Join the penguin parade for an action-packed festival from Wed 9 – Sat 12 July, filled with ice play, glacier music, polar camping, krill cabaret, and more! Monash University merges science and the arts, bringing some of the latest Antarctic research and discoveries to life these school holidays.

After exploring, stop by The Count’s — lunch is sorted with a menu made for hungry adventurers! The Count’s will be open from 11am-1.30pm.  A coffee van will also be available from 9am-1pm.
