Spiral Now is the second collaboration between renowned sound designer, Jethro Woodward, composer Gian Slater and the Invenio Singers who were all awarded Best Composition/Sound Design at the 2018 Green Room Awards for Rawcus Theatre’s production Song for a Weary Throat.
Utilising the state-of-the-art constellation sound system in the David Li Sound Gallery at Monash University, this premiere performance will be innovative, immersive and intimate.
The Invenio Singers have been recognized by audiences and critics alike for their innovative and sophisticated approach to choral composition and performance. Formed by singer and composer Gian Slate, the Invenio Singers explore conceptual composition, extended vocal technique, fluid improvising and choreographed movement. They have premiered eight large-scale works which were composed and directed by Slater, leading to the release of two albums.
Their latest work, Spiral Now examines the cycles of nostalgia triggered by our senses; like the huge wave that hits when the seasons shift or a smell of perfume caught when someone walks by, at times illusive and at times a trigger leading to a clear experience of déjà vu.
In celebration of senior members of our communities, Slater has recorded and collated interviews about nostalgic experience and memory. These interviews are fragmented and used alongside musical cells that become memories within the work. Audiences may hear these themes mysteriously come and go, transient and yet memorable enough to notice as they re-emerge.
