Phil Dizack (USA)

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts

$15 - $30

Heralded by DownBeat Magazine as “[one of twenty-five] Trumpet Players for the Future,” Dizack has forged a path that is at once deeply rooted in jazz’s lineage and strikingly modern. Dizack’s musical journey began in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where his father’s ever‑playing stereo filled their home with blues, jazz and funk.

These formative sounds, coupled with his admiration for trumpeter heroes Miles Davis, Lee Morgan and Clifford Brown, shaped his expressive approach to the instrument.

After moving to New York City in 2003 to attend the Manhattan School of Music, he honed his craft under the mentorship of legendary figures Bobby Watson and Eddie Palmieri, earning numerous accolades along the way, including winning the National Trumpet Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. In addition to his performing career, Dizack is a dedicated educator. Since 2019, he has held the position of Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the University of North Texas, where he helps shape the next generation of musicians.

This show will feature a performance with students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance, where he’s teaching, rehearsing, performing and recording with the students as part of his Monash residency. These activities enable students the privilege and rare opportunity to rehearse, perform and record the compositions alongside the composers. This unique student experience is a key pedagogical approach within the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance, with established artists mentoring the emerging generation of jazz musicians. The recording will be released as part of the ongoing Monash Sessions series, which can be found here: https://monashschoolofmusicandperformance.bandcamp.com/
