What transpires when you hear words, sounds, silences through the voice of a dancer? Emotions that simmer beneath the words, are unclouded to find their way directly and acutely to the viewer's heart? Through vEdanA, Priyadarsini Govind takes you on a journey through a string of rare pieces, some previously unseen through the lens of Bharatanatyam.
Priyadarsini Govind is one of India’s foremost dancer-choreographers and a visionary in Bharatanatyam today. Known for her mastery over abhinaya, ingenious approach to nritta, and strong adherence to tradition, she has been gently redefining the boundaries of the Bharatanatyam repertoire with her seamless blend of new choreography with the traditional over four decades. She has performed across India and the globe, and collaborated with luminaries such as Umayalpuram Sivaraman, T M Krishna, Bombay Jayashree, Aruna Sairam, Leela Samson, Elisabet Petit and Gowri Ramnarayan. Most recently, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she conceptualised Yavanika – The Screen of Illusion, a feature-length dance-on-film, in collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Sruti Harihara Subramanian and reputed composer Rajkumar Bharathi.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to see one of the legends of contemporary Bharatanatyam live at the Alexander Theatre in Clayton as part of IPAC Australia 2023.
