Victoria Welsh Choir’s St David’s Day celebration concert.
The program will be drawn from the rich musical tradition of Wales with hymns in Welsh and English as well as Celtic songs, all sung in beautiful four-part male harmony.
The concert will be conducted by the choir’s Musical Director, Rushan Hewawasam and will feature special guest artists, Melbourne’s own female group Bhán Tré.
Now into its 46th year of music making, VicWelsh is a traditional Welsh male voice choir, singing in four-part harmony and presenting about fifteen concerts a year mainly in Victoria. The choir is Melbourne-based but has thriving Bendigo and Ballarat chapters. The choir regularly tours interstate (South Australia 2018) and internationally. In 2012 the choir toured Wales and England and helped represent Australasia in a 520 voices pre-Olympics London Welsh Choir of the World concert at the Royal Festival Hall with Bryn Terfel. In 2016, there was a very successful tour to Wales and Worcester. Covid upset other plans, but we are excited to announce that we are making a joint tour of Sri Lanka in 2025 with Rushan’s other choir Euphony.
Apart from the annual St David’s Day concert, the choir also stages other major concerts with stars like David Hobson, Marina Prior, Silvie Paladino and Roy Best.
Over the years the choir has performed at highly prestigious venues like the Melbourne Recital Centre, Ulumbarra Theatre, Sydney Opera House and Docklands Stadium during the Rugby World Cup, but most concerts are in churches and town halls.
Performing hymns, ballads, show tunes, arias and Celtic favourites that raise the roof in chapels and concert halls from Bangor to Bairnsdale, the choir is well known for its professionalism, humour and entertaining engagement with audiences young and old alike.
As one of our hirers said, ‘They really put on a show.’
