In its first Australian season, Agathi: Refugee, a dance-theatre production by Apsaras Arts Dance Company Singapore, is a compelling exploration of the contemporary issues surrounding refugees worldwide.
Through music, poetry, and the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, Agathi seeks to shed light on the lives and struggles of refugees, highlighting their emotional states and the stigma they face. Inspired by the personal experiences of Apsaras Arts’ artistic director, Aravinth Kumarasamy, a former refugee, as well as the poetry written by refugee children published in A Book of Poems: Expressions from our Youth by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Agathi promises to deliver a poignant and powerful portrayal of the refugee experience.
Agathi is presented as part of the Indian Performing Arts Convention, Australia 2023, a collaboration between Apsaras Arts Singapore, The Academy of Indian Music Australia and Monash University Performing Arts Centres.
