MoJO Presents: JAZZEOKE!

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts

$15 - $29

Past Event

It’s karaoke – but with a live jazz big band! Step up to the mic and sing your favourite jazz standards alongside the swinging sounds of MoJO – the Mordialloc Jazz Orchestra.

Sit back with a drink and soak in the swinging sounds of a live jazz big band—or, if you’re feeling bold, step up to the mic and sing your favourite jazz standard. Either way, Jazzeoke is an unmissable night of community, spontaneity and swing.

Affectionately known as “Mordi Band,” the Mordialloc Jazz Orchestra has been a cornerstone of Melbourne’s music scene for over a century. Formed around the time of WWI, this beloved community ensemble has evolved from a traditional brass band into a dynamic jazz orchestra known for its infectious energy, heartfelt performances and inclusive spirit.

MoJO is led by Musical Director Peter Foley, awarded Citizen of the Year 2023 by the City of Kingston for his remarkable contribution to the local cultural landscape. Under his leadership, MoJO has inspired multiple generations, with many members going on to become professional musicians and educators. His work has also created lasting social connections and a sense of wellbeing for musicians who come from all over Melbourne to play with the band.
Peter’s vision has led to the success of signature events like Jazz-a-oke, Carols by Kingston, and Big Band Sunsets concerts featuring stars like James Morrison, Kate Ceberano and Marina Prior.

With a mission to support musicians at every stage of their journey, MoJO makes music fun, accessible and joyfully unpretentious. Their repertoire spans jazz greats like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Bublé, Etta James and more.

Since transforming into a jazz orchestra in the 1990s, and commissioning a full jazz library in 2005 thanks to a generous bequest from late tuba player Ian Shedden, MoJO has continued to innovate while remaining a warm, welcoming musical home for all.
