Pick up a paintbrush with artist Kon Dimopoulos and help us install The Blue Trees at Monash Clayton this winter! Free drop-in workshops start on 15 August. A relaxed and creative way to connect with Monash gardens. Places are limited.

The Blue Trees takes an urban landscape with which you are familiar and changes it into something surreal, unfamiliar, even uncomfortable. We are creatures who like certainty - and we become disconcerted when our environment changes. How do we connect with this dramatically different blue landscape?

Created by Melbourne artist Konstantin Dimopoulos, The Blue Trees has been presented in global cities for the past twenty years, as part of a wider question that asks can art save the world? Maybe not on its own, but it can join up thinking and discussion throughout the global community to highlight social and environmental issues and raise social consciousness.

It is easy to restore the trees we have coloured blue back to their natural state. The chalk paint is in no way harmful to the trees. Yet the primordial Old Forests that are hundreds of years old are still disappearing at an alarming rate with no option of restoration, and with this destruction the extinction of countless species of other flora and wildlife. Old Forests are the lungs of the earth, providing much of the oxygen we breathe. Yet only some 30 percent remain. We invite you to connect with The Blue Trees and be part of the conversation.

After the installation workshops, you can also join Konstantin Dimopoulos to hear him speak about his creative process during Progress Festival:
